Men's Therapy in Brentwood, TN

A place to stop holding it all together for a while. Counseling for men in Brentwood and Franklin who are capable on the outside and tired, restless, or disconnected underneath.

The expectations no one says out loud

Most men learn early what's expected of them: be steady, be useful, don't make it a big deal. Provide. Fix it. Push through. Those expectations can build real strength, and they can also leave you with nowhere to put fear, grief, or doubt.

Over time, a lot of men end up living a version of life that looks solid from the outside while something underneath hasn't been named. Therapy is one of the few places where that part gets to speak without you having to manage anyone else's reaction.

When opening up feels foreign

Many men tell me they don't know how to talk about feelings, or that they're not even sure what they feel. That's not a flaw. It's usually a skill that was never practiced, often because it wasn't safe or welcome.

We don't start with a vocabulary test. We start with what's happening in your life, at work, at home, in your head at 2 a.m., and we slow it down enough to understand it.

Anger, stress, and checking out

For many men, emotion shows up sideways. Irritability, a short fuse, working constantly, scrolling, drinking, or going numb. These aren't random. They're often ways of coping with something that feels too big or too exposed to look at directly.

  • Feeling on edge, irritable, or quick to anger
  • Staying busy so you don't have to feel anything
  • Shutting down in hard conversations with a partner
  • Stress that shows up in sleep, health, or focus

Identity, confidence, and self-worth

When your sense of worth is tied to performance, any setback can feel like a verdict. A career change, a failed relationship, a season of burnout, or simply getting older can shake loose questions about who you are when you're not achieving.

Part of this work is building a sense of self that doesn't collapse when the scoreboard does.

Shame, vulnerability, and being a man

Shame tells men to hide the very things that most need care. It says: if they knew this about you, they'd lose respect for you. So the secret stays, and the isolation grows.

Vulnerability isn't weakness here. It's the doorway to being known, and being known is what most of the men I work with are quietly hungry for.

What men's counseling with Tyler looks like

Sessions are conversational, direct, and collaborative. You won't be lectured or handed a worksheet and sent on your way. We'll look at your story: what you learned growing up, how you've learned to protect yourself, and how those patterns show up now in your relationships and work.

I draw from attachment-based, Emotionally Focused, and trauma-informed approaches. In plain terms, that means paying attention to the emotions and needs underneath behavior, not just the behavior itself. We go at a pace that feels workable, and you set the goals.

Before becoming a therapist, I spent years as a touring musician and walked through my own anxiety, shame, and addiction. I know what it's like to look fine and not be fine. That's part of why this work matters to me.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to have something 'seriously wrong' to start therapy?

No. Many men come in because they feel stuck, disconnected, or tired of carrying things alone. You don't need a crisis or a diagnosis to benefit from a space to think clearly and be honest.

I'm not good at talking about feelings. Will that be a problem?

Not at all. Most men I work with say the same thing. We start with what's going on in your life, and the words tend to come with time. There's no right way to do this.

Does Tyler offer men's counseling for clients in Franklin?

Yes. Tyler's office is in Brentwood, a short drive for most Franklin and Williamson County residents. Online sessions are also available for clients located in Tennessee.

Is there a men's group as well as individual therapy?

Yes. Tyler leads PATH, a men's group focused on story, shame, and identity, and BRAVE, a group for men working on sexual behaviors that feel out of control. Some men do both group and individual work.
