Compulsive sexual behavior

Pornography & Sexual Addiction Recovery in Brentwood, TN

If you keep promising yourself it's the last time, and it isn't, you're not broken and you're not alone. Confidential counseling for unwanted sexual behavior, built on honesty instead of humiliation.

When a behavior stops feeling like a choice

Viewing pornography is not, by itself, an addiction or a disorder, and this isn't a space that assumes it is. People come to this work because a pattern of sexual behavior is causing them distress, conflicting with their values, or hurting their relationships, and they haven't been able to change it on their own.

Common experiences include:

  • Repeating a behavior you've decided to stop
  • Spending more time than intended, or escalating content
  • Using sexual behavior to escape stress, loneliness, or boredom
  • Compartmentalizing, or living what feels like a double life
  • Cycles of resolve, relapse, and regret

Shame keeps the cycle going

Shame is often the fuel, not the cure. When someone feels disgusted with themselves, the natural move is to hide, and hiding creates exactly the isolation that makes the behavior more likely next time.

That's why this work starts with understanding, not condemnation. You can take a behavior seriously without treating yourself as worthless.

Triggers, coping, and what's underneath

Compulsive behavior usually does something for us, at least in the moment. It can soothe anxiety, numb loneliness, release stress, or offer a sense of control. Together we'll map your cycle: what tends to set it off, what you're feeling beforehand, and what you're actually needing.

Once the cycle makes sense, you can start building other ways to meet those needs.

Attachment, intimacy, and connection

Many people who struggle with compulsive sexual behavior also struggle with closeness: letting someone see them, asking for what they need, or staying present in intimacy. An attachment-informed approach looks at how these patterns developed and how real connection can become safer than escape.

Rebuilding trust in relationships

When a partner discovers hidden sexual behavior, the hurt can be profound. Rebuilding trust takes honesty, consistency, and time, and it usually works best when both partners have support. Tyler can work with individuals, and with couples ready to begin repair, using Emotionally Focused Therapy to help both people feel heard.

Accountability without humiliation

Real accountability isn't public shaming or white-knuckling. It's having people and structures in your life that help you tell the truth and keep showing up, even after a bad week. For many men, a group like BRAVE becomes a key part of that.

Tyler's training and approach

Tyler holds a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy and completed two years of clinical training under a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (C-SAT). He is not himself a C-SAT. His work in this area combines that training with attachment-based, Emotionally Focused, and trauma-informed therapy.

Tyler also speaks openly about his own journey through addiction and recovery. That doesn't make your story the same as his, but it does mean you'll be met with understanding rather than judgment.

Sessions are confidential. We'll set goals that fit your values and your life, whether that means stopping a specific behavior, understanding it more deeply, or repairing a relationship affected by it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tyler work with pornography-related concerns?

Yes. Tyler works with adults who are distressed by their pornography use or other sexual behaviors and want to change, as well as couples navigating the impact on their relationship. He trained for two years under a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist.

Does watching porn mean I have an addiction?

Not necessarily. Therapy here doesn't start from a label. What matters is whether a pattern is causing you distress, conflicting with your values, or harming your relationships, and whether you want help changing it.

Is this confidential?

Yes. Therapy is confidential, with standard legal and ethical exceptions related to safety that Tyler will explain clearly at the start. Online sessions are available for clients in Tennessee who prefer added privacy.

Can my partner be involved?

When you're both ready, yes. Some people begin individually and add couples sessions later. Partners who have been hurt also deserve their own support.
